How do I apply for a network connection?
The process of registering a new computer on the network is automated via our setup program. Please see the registration page for full details on the process
Please also read the associated rules and conditions carefully, before you apply, as you will be under obligation to follow them if you use the network.
How can I check how much traffic I am generating?
You can examine how much Internet traffic your computer has generated during the last day, week or month by logging in to the Registration Server and following the link to " Traffic Statistics". You will need to use your Raven ID and password to log in.
What sort of virus scanner should I use?
The College requires you to run the latest verison of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, which is available free as part of the setup program.
Please see our Security Advice page for more information.
How do I read my Hermes e-mail from home?
The easiest way is to use the Hermes webmail interface.
See the webmail services page for a full explanation of the webmail service.
See this guide for more comprehensive instructions on how to set up mail clients such as Outlook to receive your University e-mail.
Where is the University Computing Service FAQ List?
Here is a link to the UCS FAQ List
How do I use VoIP?
We were previously recommending the InternetPhoneCo as a VoIP service, however the company has since gone out of business and the service is no longer available. Should you wish to use VoIP, we are recommending the use of Skype
How do I get a Raven password?
Visit the Raven password page to reset your Raven password. You will need to be able to quote your CRSid and the password for either your Hermes, Engineering, or Mole e-mail account.
How do I remove Norton antivirus before I install McAfee?
New computers often come with a free copy of Norton's antivirus. This is only a trial version unless you opt to pay for the full copy. You should remove the trial version before running the setup program.
To remove the Norton trial software take the following steps:
- Open Control Panel from the Start menu
- Select Add/Remove Programs (XP) or Programs and Features (Vista)
- Find 'Nortons Antivirus' or 'Norton Internet Security' in the list of installed programs
- Highlight it and then click the Change button, not the remove button
- Select 'Remove All' and follow the steps through until the computer restarts
If you have any difficulties uninstalling Norton, please visit Symantec's website where they provide a tool for dealing with such issues. You can find it on the Symantec website.
Help: I don't understand all this jargon!
