Finance and Costs

Financing your course at Robinson College

This page is intended to give you useful information about the current cost of studying at the Robinson College and about the UK government funding that is available.   Because the information on this website is intended for students starting courses in October 2012, there are substantial differences in the figures quoted here and those for students starting courses in October 2011.  Although we endeavour to ensure the accuracy of information on this site, Robinson College cannot be held responsible if you act upon the information.  We would therefore suggest you confirm details of any information before acting upon them.

Further and more comprehensive information on fees and finance can be found on the University website at: www.cam.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/finance.

Costs

A student's costs consist of University tuition fees, College fees, and maintenance, or living, costs.

  • From 2012 entry, the University of Cambridge will be charging Tuition Fees of £9,000 per year to almost all new Home and EU status students. The main exceptions being affiliated students.
  • In 2011-12, tuition fees for new undergraduates from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are charged £6,194 (most Arts courses), £7,768 (Architecture, Geography, Music and Mathematics), £9,867 (Science), or £21,938 (Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine).  Applicants should contact the relevant Island authority for more information about the financial support available.
  • The Tuition Fees for overseas students at the University of Cambridge are given here.
  • The University has some part-cost bursaries and scholarships that EU and Overseas students can apply for.
  • In 2011/2012 College Fees are £5,350 and they are only payable by those who are not eligible for student support.
  • Maintenance, or living, costs cover accommodation and all other living costs while in Cambridge such as food, clothing, books, travel to from Cambridge at the start and end of each term, and entertainment. The University gives a general guideline as to how much a student will spend in one year, but this can vary hugely, dependent on the individual lifestyle. The current guideline is approximately £7,170. See Cambridge University Admissions' living costs page for further information but note that Robinson College does not have a separate kitchen facilities charge.

Student support for Home status students

If you are a Home status student, you will generally be eligible to apply for student support from the UK government that will have to be repaid in installments once you have graduated and are earning a minimum salary. This takes the form of a Student Loan for Tuition Fees and a Student Loan for Maintenance (living costs). Some students, dependent on household income, are also eligible for a Maintenance Grant, which doesn't have to be repaid at all. The Cambridge University Admissions Financial Support page provides comprehensive information on these and other forms of support available to Home status students.

In order to be exempt from paying the College Fee you must apply for student support (it is possible to apply but not accept all or any of the amount offered to you). After an application has been submitted and processed you will receive a Financial Notification letter; this letter will show how much support is available to you and how much of that you have decided to take. The letter shows your Student Support number and confirms your eligibility for financial support, which in turn exempts you from paying the College Fee.

Student support for EU status students

If you are an EU status student, you will generally be eligible to apply for student support from the UK government that will have to be repaid in installments once you have graduated and are earning a minimum salary. This takes the form of a Student Loan for Tuition Fees. The Cambridge University Admissions Financial Support page provides comprehensive information on this and other forms of support available to EU status students.

EU students will not be able to apply for a UK government Student Loan for Maintenance (living costs) so will need to cover living costs from their own sources. However, for the 2010-2011 year, if the income of the family with which you live was less than the equivalent of £50,020 per year, you could have been eligible for a bursary from the Cambridge Bursary Scheme for EU students.

Student support for Overseas status students

Overseas students will need to cover costs from their own sources. However, there is a Cambridge University Bursary scheme for Overseas students bursaries and scholarships that Overseas students can apply for.
