Graduates
Robinson College has a thriving graduate community, with graduate students studying subjects across the full range of science and arts subjects available at Cambridge University. Robinson is well-known for its beautiful gardens and is situated directly behind the main University Library; it is a short walk from the Sidgwick Site which is home to many of the arts faculties. In addition, Robinson is one of the closest colleges to the faculty of mathematics as well as the science departments located on the West Cambridge site.
Robinson has excellent accommodation for graduate students, having recently finished building new en-suite accommodation specifically designed for graduate students. Robinson is normally able to house graduate students for three years. However, this year, due to a particularly large University intake we have been asked to take more students than usual and we are not able to accommodate everyone. If you have only recently accepted a place at Robinson, we would therefore urge you to look for accommodation elsewhere in the City. The best places to look are the University Accommodation Service and a local on-line service: BrettWard
Graduate students at Robinson become members of the MCR whose committee represents graduate students' views and organises social events. Graduate students participate in many College societies and sports clubs. More information about the MCR is available on their website and from their alternative prospectus.
How to Apply
The Board of Graduate Studies is responsible for the admissions process for the majority of graduate courses. Full details on how to apply are given on the Apply for Graduate Study section of the Cambridge University Graduate Admissions website. Courses for which you need to contact the appropriate department or institute directly include MBA, MEd, and PGCE.
Funding and Fellowships
The College provides funds to help with research expenses such as fieldwork and travel to academic conferences. It is also able to offer hardship funds; an average of £12,000 per year has been allocated over the past three years. Robinson also has two specific scholarships aimed at supporting graduate students in the sciences and humanities, which are described in more detail below.
Lewis Graduate Scholarship
The College expects to award one Lewis Scholarship to a graduate student
applying to read for a Ph.D. degree in the humanities. The scholarship is
tenable for up to three years, subject to satisfactory academic progress; it
may be held in conjunction with other awards. The scholarship covers
University and College fees at the Home/EU level and provides the student
with a maintenance allowance up to the University recommended level
(currently £11, 250).
The scholarship is open to all applicants who name Robinson College as their
College of first choice on the Board of Graduate Studies Application Form
for Admissions as a Graduate student, or are repared to change College if
offered the scholarship. The scholarship is conditional on the candidate
being offered a place at the University.
Applicants should send a curriculum vitae and details of their intended programme of research including no more than one A4 page describing their proposed research project), together with details of other grant applications, either by post to the Graduate Admissions Tutor, Robinson College, Cambridge, CB3 9AN,or by email no later than 31 March 2012 for entry on 1 October 2012. Applicants will be informed of decisions reached by the selectors by 01 May 2012.
Applicants should also arrange for two confidential references to be sent
directly to the College by the same closing date. References should include
details of candidates' likely degree result if not yet obtained.
Yates-Unilever Scholarships
Up to three Yates-Unilever Scholarships, tenable for one year and renewable, are offered annually to Graduate Students from overseas countries who register for a Ph.D. Degree in a science subject at the College. Applications are usually made in the first year of study. In any one year the award is unlikely to exceed £300 to any student.
Robinson College completed the construction of new accommodation
facilities for graduate students in September 2008.
