Last month Robinson College, Cambridge, one of the UK’s leading academic venues hosted the first clic+ Club seminar on Event Research, the introductory gathering of its ‘5 Steps to Successful Events’ series.
40 event professionals from across the industry joined the two keynote speakers, Jackie Mulligan, director of enterprise and principle lecturer, UK Centre for Events Management, Leeds Beckett University and Richard John, management and events consultant, industry trainer and event journalist to define best practice in conducting research for events.
Richard explored the need to move from “seller” to “educator” by delivering effective knowledge-based live events, such as seminars and workshops. He shared some insight into branding and positioning events to attract the right delegates, and discussed how to create a demand that is enough to attract a “hungry” audience.
Jackie shared her initial findings from ground breaking research carried out in 2015 at ten European and USA industry events focusing on attendee participation and what this seems to be telling us about the most effective way to engage audiences now.
The dynamic event incorporated technology to increase participation, including One-Tap badges to foster networking and a fun Catchbox – a portable microphone which can be thrown amongst the audience – providing another fun, light-hearted, interactive element.
To keep Club members invigorated and attentive through, chilled fruit smoothies on arrival provided a fruity burst of energy and were followed by low carb, healthy canapes, promoting Robinson College’s approach to clean eating for conferencing.
Clic+ Club was also proud to be able to support the series charity partner, Blue Smile, a local Cambridge charity helping change the lives of young people with learning and behavioural disorders. A special raffle was organised, with prizes generously donated by Robinson College and Scudamore, raising £105.00. This money will go towards the charity’s important, ongoing work.

This year, clic+ Club will host two further events in the Crausaz Wordsworth Building, Robinson College, Cambridge, with further dates for 2017 to be confirmed:
Event Planning, Thursday 7th July 2016: A seminar which tackles the planning process head-on, talking top tips and best practice to ensure you’re organised and on-track. Confirmed speakers include, Susan Heaton-Wright, creative director, Viva Live Music and Annabel Bradford, Marketing and Events Manager from Redgate.
Event Creation, Friday 21st October 2016: Ben Cole, director of Inspired will focus on content creation, key messaging and desired outcomes.
The club has evolved from the award-winning clic+ 2014 and 2015 and looks to build on the initiative’s founding principles: Connect, Learn, Innovate and Communicate.
Last week, Robinson College received the CHS Award for Best Auditorium, praising the space’s modern, smart and elegant design and recognising its multi-purpose use for events.
