Academic Visitors

The College has limited accommodation for senior academic visitors from Universities around the world who come to Cambridge for periods from one term to a whole academic year.

Bye Fellowships

The College elects a small number of Bye Fellows each year. These are reserved for senior academic researchers who wish to spend from one term to one academic year in Cambridge. Bye Fellows must be sponsored by one of our own Fellows. Occasionally suitably renowned academics will approach the College directly and then be put in touch with one of our Fellows who will consider sponsoring them. Bye Fellows are expected to be resident in the College and to play their part in the academic life of the College. There are 2 flats within the heart of the College which are routinely used for accommodating Bye Fellows. These are fully equipped 1 or 2 bedroom flats and cost between £1,370 and £2,005 a month (28 days) fully inclusive (2023-24 rate). Bye Fellows may eat in the SCR and the Garden Restaurant at the Members' rate. Apart from subsidised food, no financial support is available to Bye Fellows. Partners are welcome, but children under 16 years of age cannot be accommodated in the College. For more information please click here.

Applications are considered by the Membership Committee each term and recommendations are made to the College Council. Generally, applications are considered at least a year before an applicant wishes to take up residence.

Applications for Bye Fellowships will normally be made through one of our own Fellows, but if this is not possible, an approach should be made to the Deputy Warden (Chair of the Membership Committee).

Senior Membership

Occasionally, the Membership Committee will consider less senior researchers and academics who do not want to be resident, or those who cannot spend as much as a term in Cambridge. In these cases Senior Membership maybe offered for a period. Senior Membership allows some dining rights in College and may also allow a short period in College accommodation, subject to availability.

Applications to visit as a Senior Member should be made to the Deputy Warden (Chair of the Membership Committee).

Ad Hoc Academic Visitors - Summer term

Over the Long Vacation Term (1 July to 30 September), the College is often able to provide accommodation for academic visitors who value the College's location adjacent to the University Library. Such accommodation is usually limited to single rooms with internet, shared bathrooms and kitchens, though some twin/double rooms may be available. Though the College cannot provide a full catering service over this period, ad hoc visitors will normally be allowed to purchase meals in the Garden Restaurant when it is open. Prices vary but most rooms are single rooms and are priced at £44 to £57/night with twin/double rooms priced at £61 to £90/night.

Space is limited and therefore it is advisable to apply as early as possible. Applications should be made, stating dates required, to the Accommodation Officer who will then send a booking form and request a deposit to confirm the booking.

Student Visitors

Students who are studying at another University and are visiting Cambridge during the summer vacation for academic purposes may also be offered accommodation. Sponsorship by the relevant Cambridge University department will be required. Applications should be made, stating dates required, to the Accommodation Officer.
