Local Cambridge Information
There is plenty to do when visiting or living in Cambridge. The City has a population of around 120 thousand making it a vibrant place with plenty to see and do. Steeped in thousands of years history and coupled with modern contemporary architecture, Cambridge is an eclectic mix of the old and new in a changing, modern Britain.
Robinson College has one of the prettiest and best kept gardens in Cambridge. Other Colleges near by with comparable grounds include King's, Clare and Trinity. All are a short walk from the College down Burrells Walk (download our PDF for walking routes into the city centre). The University's world famous Botanic Garden is a beautiful place to visit all year round.
The city is well positioned. Trains run frequently from London King's Cross, Liverpool St (slower service), Stansted Airport and Birmingham. If travelling by car, the Park 'n' Ride will run you into the city throughout the day, and until 9pm during the Christmas shopping season.
Food and drink often plays an important part in a students' life! Cambridge has a rich variety of restaurants, pubs and cafes. Visit Cambridge has a great guide on their website where you can choose from Asian to European to Fish 'n' Chips.
Punting is a must for anyone visiting Cambridge for the first time. Robinson College is minutes away from several punt hiring companies. Choose to do it yourself or hire a guide who can point out important places from the city's rich history. Granta Boat and Punt Company are well established and close to Robinson.
The American Cemetary is a well visited attraction just outside of the city centre. Many of the tour buses include this on their route. Visit their website for more information.
Sightseeing is a fun way to get to know Cambridge. Why not do it yourself by hiring a bike. There are several places in town offering this, the closest to the train station is Station Cycles. There are also bus tours available. The hop-on / hop-off open top bus will guide you through the city, courtesy of City Sightseeing.
Finally, don't forget your shopping. Cambridge has three major shopping areas in the city centre: Market Square, the Grand Arcade and the Grafton Centre. All are within waking distance of one another. There are hundreds of shops and stalls in between too - just remember to leave yourself enough time to get round them all!
