2018 Telephone Campaign
From 26th June - 9th July 2018, current Robinson students will be contacting our alumni around the world to share college memories, chat about their experiences after leaving Robinson and thanking our alumni for their support. They will also be seeking support for the College.
Donations made during the Telephone Campaign support a range of projects. Every gift makes a difference, but this year there is an additional incentive to make your first gift to Robinson because alumnus Ben Habib (NatSci 1984) has pledged to donate £200 for every new regular gift and £75 for every one-off gift received during the telephone campaign.
“I believe in the pursuit of excellence and investing in institutions which enable this pursuit. Robinson College is such an institution and one to which I have a lifelong debt of gratitude. The College has a good financial footing but it has a modest endowment fund compared to other Cambridge colleges and there is a great deal more that needs to be done to assure its security into the future. It is my pleasure therefore to do what I can to support the College, and encourage others to do the same”.
The Telephone Campaign raises funds to help all aspects of College life. It provides flexibility to deal with issues of urgent need that arise in the course of the year, such as:
- Securing Academic Excellence - it is the individual colleges that bear most of the costs of the supervision system, although the majority of Government funding and fees are received by the central University. Robinson currently subsidises the cost of each undergraduate’s education by at least £2,700 per annum.
- Student Support - the best students are accepted on their merit alone, regardless of their financial situation and each year there are students whose financial circumstances change through no fault of their own, or who find themselves in need of financial assistance. The College is contributing an ever greater proportion of this support.
- Building development and maintenance – maintaining the living and teaching spaces and facilities, construction of new College buildings and managing the beautiful gardens.
- College Societies and Sports – provide an outlet and relaxation in a high-pressure environment, as well as bringing other members of the community into College.
Your gift will enable Robinson to continue to offer a first-class education to students from all walks of life, with all the opportunities that it brings. Thank you.

You can meet some of the student Telephone Campaign callers below — we hope their call offers you a chance to find out about their time at Robinson and about College life today.
I'm a first year Land Economist and the aspect I enjoy most about my course is the opportunity to explore a diverse range of subjects. Besides my studies, I'm a keen rower, an active participant in the Cambridge theatre scene and love having a laugh while playing in college sports teams.
I’m a final-year law student here at Robinson hoping to get a training contract at a commercial law firm after graduation. I’ve really enjoyed last few years, especially getting involved in music-making around college – I play the guitar and saxophone, and my interests span from classical to modern-day popular music, including most things in between. I did the phone campaign a couple of years ago and had a great time connecting with alumni, so I’m looking forward to doing it all again this year!
Hey I’m a first year Human, Social, and Political Science student. I really love the diversity and depth my course provides across the four subject areas. I’m so glad I go to Robinson as it’s such a close knit community, and it seems less pressurised than some of the other colleges!
Hi I'm James, a second year NatSci working towards a career in physics. I love history as well as international cuisines so I look forward to travelling as much as I can in the future. At uni I play football and squash.
Hi, I'm a second year medical student, and have plans to carry out research in clinical neuroscience over the summer. I'm the current treasurer of the CUISoc, where I also head the sponsorship subcommittee. I'm really looking forward to talking to alumni during the campaign
Hello, I'm Margo. This year I've followed the Master of Corporate Law-programme with a particular focus on topics of corporate governance. In my free time, I love to play the violin and the piano and try to get myself to yoga class as often as possible. I've enjoyed my time at Robinson very much and I look forward to speaking to the alumni!
I am a first year medical student and hope to go into the neurosciences. In my spare time I enjoy doing karate and rock climbing. I look forward to engaging with the the alumni through the campaign.
"I’m a 2nd year medical student, looking to join the British Army in the future as a medical officer. My favourite role so far in college has been repping for the Christian Union and my free time I give over to a keen interest in geopolitics and British history. I’m looking forward to communicating with alumni and learning more about life after Robinson".
“I am a second-year English undergraduate, having transferred from Law at the end of last year. Since joining Robinson College I’ve particularly enjoyed running and student theatre, and am currently preparing to teach English in Japan with Oxbridge Summer Camps Abroad during July and August. I am really looking forward to speaking with alumni and throwing myself into the forthcoming campaign!"
I’m a fourth year MML student studying Spanish and German with a particular interest in Latin American literature and visual culture. I spent my year abroad between Spain and Chile working in art galleries and teaching English. I’ve used my time at Cambridge to get involved in access and outreach projects, sitting on a number of college-based and university-wide panels, in addition to pursuing my love for the arts through the Fitzwilliam Museum Society.
Hi, I’m Sophie, a first-year historian here at Robinson, and I’m originally from just outside Birmingham. When I’m not sat at my desk behind a tower of books, I’ll often be found playing Ultimate Frisbee, in which I’ve represented both the college and university. I also love playing the violin and piano, singing in Vocal Chords (the casual college choir) and have very much enjoyed spending the last year working on Design on the May Ball Committee
A third year undergrad of Natural Sciences who loves traveling, reading and talking about Biology. Looking forward to receiving career and any life advices :)
