Good-byes, welcomes and a wedding in the College Chapel: news from Grange Road
Looking forward to welcoming Freshers: A message from the RCSA
Everything from a sports and societies fair, induction events, meet and greets, and even, fingers crossed, a bop or two are in the plan. At the same time, this will not only be an opportunity to welcome new Robinsonians, but also one full of new experiences for last year’s freshers, who have still yet to see a normally functioning college! To that end, we’re also hoping to hold a few refreshers events for those who have missed out on so much of the Robinson experience over the last 18 months. Whatever shape the new term takes though one thing is for sure, the freshers can expect as warm a welcome as any cohort past or future - the RCSA will make sure of that!
First post lockdown wedding celebrated in the College Chapel
Kathryn Reid (MML, 2011) and Douglas Robinson (Natural Sciences, 2012) were the first couple to tie the knot in the College Chapel after the national lockdowns. On Saturday 24 July in front of the College Chaplain, their families and friends, and fellow Robinsonians, Katie and Douglas celebrated their very special day in the place where they had met and spent many a memorable day. "Our wedding day was just perfect - especially after the past year that everyone has had, it meant the world to both of us to be able to get married surrounded by our friends and family in a place that feels like home to us both, and the place where we met singing in the chapel choir. We’re so grateful to everyone at the college for making the whole process so easy and for all their hard work in making the day run so smoothly."
Meeting again, and a change to say farewell: London Drinks Reception
We look forward very much to seeing Robinson's alumni and friends at the postponed Annual Reception at the Law Society on 29 September. Postponed from July, this annual highlight in the College calendar will be an opportunity for alumni and friends to meet again over drinks and canapes, and to say farewell to Professor David Yates, who steps down as Warden the following day.
We are grateful to those who have supported the Professor David Yates Master's Scholarships, launched to celebrate the Warden's 20 years with us and to make much-needed funding available to those postgraduate students who need it most. So far we have raised a fantastic £192,704 - just under £8,000 short of what we need to endow a permanent Scholarship Fund. If you'd like to contribute to the Fund, you can do so here. Many thanks indeed for your support.
Outreach and Admissions in the Autumn - from Ruth Moss, Schools' Liaison Officer
With the excitement of this year’s results period now over, we here in the Admissions Office are looking forward to welcoming a new cohort of undergraduates to Robinson this October. Meanwhile, our work with future prospective applicants continues: the annual Robinson Essay Prize is well underway, giving incoming Year 13 students across the country a chance to develop and showcase their writing and research skills. Winners will be invited to the College in September, joined by the commended entrants of the New Directions Composition Prize, which received 70 submissions in its inaugural year.
September also sees the return of the College’s STEP Prep Workshop, which aims to introduce Year 13 students to the intricacies and challenges of the STEP exams. More widely, the September Open Days will follow on from the successes of the virtual July open events, coupled with small-group tours of the College grounds to those who wish to experience the College grounds themselves.
Robinson at the 2021 Alumni Festival
From Friday 24 September until Tuesday 28 September University of Cambridge Alumni Festival will offer online access to a great number of lectures, live discussions, talks and virtual tours prepared by academicians from across the whole collegiate Cambridge.
Robinson College is going to be represented by Professor Alison Young with her talk on The UK constitution: Fit for purpose? , and Dr Tanya Filer (MML, 2004) with her talk How should a government be? The new levers of state power. Dr Gordon Davies (Classics, 1991) will premier his 2021: An Aerial Odyssey Around Cambridge video. It is a circumnavigation of Cambridge’s industrial sites, past and present, integrating contemporary footage with archive photography from various sources like the University Library Map Room and Collection of Aerial Photography.

Almost the last chance to win a prize - The New Alumni Survey 2021
One lucky winner will enjoy drinking College Port from cut crystal port glasses this autumn. Spend a few moments to fill in the Alumni Survey. We would like to hear from you what we can do better, what you would like to see more or less of, what appeals to you and how often you would like to hear from us. We look forward to hearing from you very soon.
Scores of Alumni have already submitted their surveys and entered our competition, and we are grateful for the feedback received so far. We would like to hear from even more of you, so please spare us 5 minutes and fill in the survey. We want our alumni community to tell us about what we can do better, what you’d like to see more or less of, what appeals to you and how often you’d like to hear from us. A bottle of Robinson port and two port glasses are waiting for the lucky winner.
We very much hope to see you at one of the in-person events we are planning for September. Please look out for your invitations.
