Welcome to Dr M. Jashim Ali Chowdhury, who joins Robinson College as the Baxandall Visiting Fellow for Michaelmas Term.

Dr Chowdhury is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Hull, where he teaches and researches in the fields of comparative public law, constitutionalism, human rights, and environmental law. He brings over nineteen years of teaching and research experience spanning both the United Kingdom and Bangladesh.

Dr Chowdhury completed his PhD in Law at King’s College London as a Commonwealth Scholar, following an LL.M. in International and Comparative Law from Tulane University as a Fulbright Scholar. Earlier, he earned both his LL.B. and LL.M. with first-class distinction and first position from the University of Chittagong.

His research has developed an international reputation in the fields of constitutional governance, comparative constitutional law, parliamentary studies, and human rights. He is the author of five books and numerous peer-reviewed publications with leading academic publishers, including Cambridge University Press, Routledge, Springer Nature, Hart Publishing, and Brill Nijhoff. His recent monograph, Fifty Years of Bangladesh Parliament: A Critical Evaluation (2025), offers a major study of parliamentary institutions and democratic governance.

During his time at Robinson College, Dr Chowdhury will work on the completion of his forthcoming Springer Nature monograph, Judges in Environmental Management: A Collaborative Democratic Dialogue between the Judicial and Political Branches. The project explores how courts, legislatures, and governments can work together to address environmental challenges while preserving democratic legitimacy, drawing on comparative experiences from both the Global South and the Global North.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Chowdhury to Cambridge and look forward to his contribution to the Robinson community and Baxandall lecture.

The Baxandall Visiting Fellowship was founded in 2023, thanks to a transformative gift from Leigh Baxandall (1979, Natural Sciences).
