Rave reviews for Homo Criminalis: How Crime Organises the World by Dr Mark Galeotti

Dr Mark Galeotti (History, 1984) describes his latest book: Homo Criminalis: How Crime Organises the World (Penguin Books, 2025) as: "a whistle-stop tour of how the world's criminal underbelly has shaped state-making, capitalism, globalisation and all forms of so-called legitimate power, showing the emergence of modern society through the evolution of the underworld and its crimes, from Chinese banditry and eighteenth-century English tea smuggling to today's cocaine submarines and the high-tech crimes of tomorrow." Mark add, "It was, unsurprisingly, a fun book to research and write!"

Praise for the book includes:
"Glittering...the author's obvious enthusiasm for the subject is matched by impressive erudition," The Spectator.
"The readable, scary, fun beach read of new crime literature," Financial Times.

New Book by Professor Peter Kornicki Explores the Books of the Edo Period

A new book has been published in Japanese by Professor Peter Kornicki, Emeritus Fellow, entitled: Soto kara mita Edo jidai no shoseki bunka. Peter said: "My study of book culture of the Edo period (1600-1868) has a focus on manuscripts. As in Britain and elsewhere, the advent of print did not put an end to manuscripts, and throughout the Edo period people kept writing, copying and reading manuscripts. Sometimes this was because the contents were too scandalous to print, but other reasons were the desire to keep the contents more or less secret. If you ever wanted to know more about the books of Edo-period Japan, this book is for you - provided you can read Japanese!" Author's website
