Comberton Village College Visit

January 21, 2025
A group of people on the outdoor theatre stage in the Robinson gardens posing for a photo in a 'dramatic' style.

We had a great day welcoming two A Level English classes from Comberton Village College today! They received two taster lectures: one from Dr Lizzi Rawlinson-Mills on reader response theory and (various) interpretations of 'what is poetry?' and 'what is poetry for?' and Dr Scott Annett on Shakespeare's Othello and how we can use other plays to illuminate the texts we study at school!

Our Student Ambassador, Daisy Bates (2nd Year, English), led the Student Life Q&A and a tour of the college grounds.

They also visited the English Faculty to have a look around the facilities offered to English students at Cambridge. We particularly had a great time testing out the outdoor theatre stage, the Maria Bjornson Theatre (pictured on the first slide) and thinking about how to approach poems like 'Dog on a British Airways Airbus 319-100' and how they might fit into our notion of what poetry is and what poetry is for.
