Exhibition: In place of loss: Landscapes of memory and repair

Robinson Fellow Dr Iza Kavedžija, curator, invites you to this exhibition at the Leper Chapel this weekend.
When life-changing events of overwhelming loss make dwelling impossible, creating links with the past—both near and distant—offers a way to inhabit the present moment. Offering sensory, embodied, immersive, and even visceral experiences, artworks that engage more than language alone offer alternative pathways to understanding, care, and repair in landscapes of loss.
In this exhibition, a group of artists from Japan explore how the traces of the past can be animated in places of loss. Fumio Obara, Ryusuke Ito, Tomo Ishimura and Sahoko Aki have all created works in the areas affected by Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. Many of them have collaborated with and responded to the work of archaeologists, exploring how engagement with prehistoric evidence can help to re-establish a meaningful connection to the present moment in places of loss. In Cambridge, three artists from the UK - Andrew Littlejohn, Issam Kourbaj and Robert Simpkins - engage with these works and offer their own responses, either to the landscapes of loss or to the artworks on display.
