Career Planning & Skill Building

While you are at Robinson, you may also be envisioning future paths.

Whether you’re unsure of what you want your future to hold or you have a 10-step plan to get to your dream career, University is a time to explore options, seek out experiences, and learn new or hone old skills. Along the way this will help you prepare for your next stop wherever that might be! There are many opportunities and support options within the College and University to help you throughout that process.

Applications for new Flight Paths mentoring & coaching opportunities now open! Submit interest by Sunday 22 February. See below for more information.

The Robinson Wings Mentoring Scheme offers students the opportunity to develop positive mentor-mentee relationships with alumni, gain insight into future career possibilities, receive guidance and advice, and broaden their professional networks.

  • How do I sign up?
    • Complete this form by Sunday 22 February to indicate your interest in being connected with a mentor and share some initial information about your goals/hopes: Student Information – Fill out form
    • You can get in touch with Fiona at fsd25@robinson.cam.ac.uk with any questions.
  • Format:
    • Mentors & mentees can establish together the number of meetings at the beginning of the mentorship or as they go along to accommodate their specific schedules and goals for the mentoring scheme. For example, some paired mentors and mentees may make the most of the scheme through multiple meetings to discuss the industry, work-life balance, skill development, CV & cover letter revision, and/or interview practice and for some they may achieve everything in just 1-2 conversations.
    • The expected time commitment is around 3 hours for mentors and 5+ for mentees with differences according to number of meetings agreed on and tasks completed by the mentee.
  • What else will the mentorship entail?
    • Identifying an initial set of questions and/or goals for the mentoring scheme.
    • Takeing ownership of the agenda for mentorship meetings to get the most out of them. Identify what you’d like to discuss and what questions you have, ahead of each meeting and share with mentor.
    • Respecting your mentor’s time by ensuring to: respond promptly to communications; attend arranged meetings or reschedule as far in advance as possible; and follow through on agreed tasks (such as editing a CV).
    • Completing a goal setting exercise and final feedback form following the end of the mentoring scheme.

Robinson College is delighted to offer students the opportunity for individual coaching sessions thanks to the generous offer by alumnus Rhys Phillip.

  • What is coaching?
    • Coaching is a structured, future-focused partnership that helps you clarify what you want, think more strategically, and take purposeful action. It can be a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires clients to maximize their personal and professional potential.

In 1:1 sessions, coaching gives you dedicated space to think critically about your next steps—explring career paths, testing assumptions, identifying strengths, and aligning your decisions with your deeper values and life priorities.
