Ling Pui Sze

Artist's statement: Ling Pui Sze graduated in Fine Arts (BFA) from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2012, receiving the Wucius Wong Creative Ink Painting Award at graduation. Her solo exhibitions included It all begins in the sea (2014) and Life is meant to be messy (2022). Joint exhibitions included Humor in Ink (2021) and Women + Ink | China + Hong Kong (2019). Her works were featured in Art Basel – Hong Kong, Art Central, Fine Art Asia and Ink Asia. Her works are collected by M+ Museum for Visual Culture, the Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford and private collectors.

Ling Pui Sze has created a number of experimental ink and collage series in which she collects images of nature taken by various instruments, such as microscopes and satellites. She tore and reassembled the pieces into abstract creatures and landscapes which creates transfigured images that are both familiar and distant. This documents Ling’s interpretation of reality. The works’ texture is created by collaging different types of paper and the digital images’ colours and sizes are constantly adjusted through computer and inkjet printer, Ling creates with an iterative process. The works manifest incidental organic forms, resembling the evolution of life and a reconstruction of another world on the canvas. Together with other media such as sculpture, video and installation, Ling also explores the relationship between biological traits and the development of human society.
