Cancer Research UK, the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) have awarded £10m to the Cancer Data-Driven Detection (CD3) programme, led by Cambridge researchers.

The CD3 programme aims to access and link data from different sources to develop advanced statistical models that help scientists accurately predict who is most likely to get cancer. In addition, the programme will develop new tools for assessing risk in clinical settings.

The five years of funding will build the infrastructure required to access and link these datasets, train new data scientists, create the algorithms behind the risk models and evaluate the algorithms and AI tools to ensure that they are giving accurate and clinically useful information about cancer risk.

We're delighted to announce that Dr Steph Archer, Robinson Fellow and Director of Studies in Psychological and Behavioural Sciences, will lead one of the cross-cutting work packages that will focus on involving patients and the public in the development of cancer risk models and tools.

Steph will also be directing the capacity building activities focusing on attracting young people into educational courses and careers related to cancer risk prediction. Steph plans to run a variety of Robinson based engagement events, using our successful outreach events (e.g. Women in Science) as a blueprint.
