Frequently Asked Questions

What is the correct Academical Dress?

Graduands must wear academical dress and it is their responsibility to ensure that they acquire the correct dress. The University guidelines on academical dress and contact details for academical dress suppliers are available here although the Praelector’s Secretary also sends information on academical dress to Robinson graduands.

Are there dress requirements for guests?

Members of the University who attend a degree ceremony in the Senate House must wear their gown. No other dress requirements apply for the guests of graduands but they should look smart.

What entry/access arrangements are in place at the Senate House?

Guest access to the Senate House is strictly by ticket only. Graduands do not need tickets. The Praelector’s Secretary advises Robinson graduands about their ticket allowance and on where and when to collect their tickets.

There is a ramp at the Senate House. Wheelchair users, those with buggies and guests who need assistance usually get access first, so guests this applies to should arrive in good time, and on arrival, should make themselves known to the Constables on duty, who will assist.

Are professional photographers on site at the Senate House?

Photos are taken of graduands at the Senate House at the precise moment when their degree is conferred. Further information on Senate House photography is available here.

When will I receive my degree certificate?

Degree certificates are only issued once degrees have been conferred (awarded). They are not automatically issued following course completion. Certificates are handed out at the Senate House to graduands who graduate in person, just after they receive their degree. Graduands who graduate in absence are sent their certificate about a week after their degree is conferred. Further information on certificates can be found here.

When will I receive my University transcript?

Degree candidates who have completed a University of Cambridge course are issued a paper transcript following the conferral (awarding) of the associated degree. They are usually issued within a few weeks of the Congregation date but may take up to eight weeks to issue during the Long Vacation. They are then forwarded to relevant graduands. Further information on transcripts is available here.
