Andrew Fischer awarded Japanese Studies Fellowship

Congratulations to Robinson postgraduate student Andrew Fischer, a Harding Distinguished Postgraduate Scholar, who has been awarded a Japanese Studies Fellowship by the Japan Foundation to conduct doctoral research at Kumamoto University for twelve months.

The Japan Foundation was established by the Government of Japan and offers a select number of fellowships to outstanding doctoral students each year. This is a fully funded fellowship.

Professor Inaba Tsuguharu kindly sponsored Andrew’s application and enabled his visit to Kumamoto University last summer. Kumamoto University is home to the documents of House Hosokawa, the warrior family Andrew’s doctoral thesis is focused on. Andrew is particularly interested in House Hosokawa’s loyal service to multiple warlords during the sixteenth century and how loyalty was conceptualized in premodern Japan.

Andrew would also like to extend his thanks to the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), which also offered him a fully funded fellowship.
