World Book Day - Alumni Abigail Dean interviewed by Student Faith Falayi

When I was given the opportunity to chat to best-selling author, Abigail Dean, I jumped at the chance. Her debut novel, Girl A, was an instant Sunday Times and New York Times Bestseller, catapulting her to astounding heights right from the start of her writing career. And, like me, she studied English right here at Robinson.

Her path traces an interesting trajectory, launching from a love of writing that began when she was a ‘teeny tiny kid’, tracks through her English studies at Cambridge and circles through to a career in law. It was Abigail's decision to abandon the ‘cliché life in the city’ in exchange for ‘three months of summer’ that brought her back full circle to writing again at age 30. This period which she spent ‘just writing’ brought about the birth of Girl A, which, Abigail tells me, is soon to be adapted into a TV series.

We also, however, get the chance to speak about her time at Cambridge - our conversation ranges from her first love of fanfictions, to the Cambridge writing scene, to a comparison of supervisors we’ve liked best (and least!). At the time of our meeting, I’m excited to hear about Abigail’s second novel, Day One, a gripping and thrilling tale of crime and conspiracy. Day One has recently been released in stores and is available to purchase now! You can read the full interview with Abigail Dean in the next Bin Brook this June.
