Congratulations to the 4 Robinson students selected to play in the rugby Varsity this weekend! 

Women’s Team – Hetta Friend is a final year medic, she plays at number 4, second row.
Hetta started playing after lockdown in October 2020, and this is her 4th blues rugby Varsity: 2021 (win), 2022 (draw), 2023 (lost) … 2024 is the decider!

A personal tribute

Newnham (1976). Robinson Fellow (1989 - 2010); Robinson Graduate Tutor and Praelector. Procotor (2003-6), Senior Proctor (2004-5). Peterhouse Fellow and Director of Development (2011 – 2024).

Dr Saskia Murk Jansen died suddenly and unexpectedly at home on 19th February this year. She was one of my closest friends.

BBC Quiz Show 'The 3rd Degree' is coming to Robinson

On Monday 26th February, three brave Robinson students (English, Law and MML (Spanish) will be taking on their professors in a battle of wits, as they go head-to-head on 'The 3rd Degree'. The rounds vary from General Knowledge, to a Subject-specific face-off, to a 'Highbrow / Lowbrow' round, where students can challenge their professors on popular culture. The questions range from Barthes to Beyoncé and no two shows are the same. Come along and cheer on the teams:

Dr Stephanie Archer receives Early Detection & Diagnosis Primer Award from Cancer Research UK

Every year in England, over 400,000 women are referred to secondary care breast services via the breast cancer suspected two-week-wait (2WW) pathway. Of the women who attend the breast clinic via the current 2WW pathway, 6% are diagnosed with cancer; the remaining 94% are discharged from the service.

Nanovic Institute awards 2024 Laura Shannon Prize to Professor Rory Finnin

Congratulations to Robinson Fellow, Rory Finnin, Professor of Ukrainian studies, for receiving the 2024 Laura Shannon Prize in Contemporary European Studies for his book “Blood of Others: Stalin's Crimean Atrocity and the Poetics of Solidarity,”.

The jury described Finnin's work as one that “forges breakthrough integrations between Slavic and Middle Eastern Studies to open up and adroitly explore a largely understudied ‘contact zone’ of imperial politics central to the ongoing re-shaping of European conflict today: Stalin’s 1944 forced deportation of Crimean Tatars.”

The Baxandall Lecture

On Tuesday 5 March 2024, Professor Catherine Cubitt - Robinson's Baxandall Fellow - will deliver the inaugural Baxandall Lecture: "An Archbishop at the End of Time: Politics and Episcopal Power c. 1000". This event is free and open to the public.

Robinson alumnus appointed to King's Counsel

Congratulations to Dr Brendan McGurk (Law, 1995), who has been appointed to King's Counsel. The official swearing-in ceremony will take place on Monday 18 March at Westminster. Dr McGurk is a Barrister with Monckton Chambers, and according to the firm is "a leading junior with a wealth of experience in Commercial, Public law and Regulatory disputes. He has appeared and made submissions at every level, including before the Supreme Court and the Grand Chamber of the Court of Justice of the European Union.
