A fantastic achievement for two second year Robinson undergrad medics who have been published in the journal Pediatrics.
“International women's day is an important opportunity to acknowledge the challenges women continue to face and celebrate their achievements in spite of these.”. Dr Stephanie Archer, Robinson Fellow
Today we celebrate our fantastic female Fellows and students including some of our founding Fellows:
Professor Morna Hooker, Life Fellow, Lady Margaret’s Professor of Divinity Emerita
When I was given the opportunity to chat to best-selling author, Abigail Dean, I jumped at the chance. Her debut novel, Girl A, was an instant Sunday Times and New York Times Bestseller, catapulting her to astounding heights right from the start of her writing career. And, like me, she studied English right here at Robinson.
Congratulations to Robinson student Makafui Avevor who has been selected to play in his first Blues football Varsity.
Maka played Falcs Varsity last year and Kestrels Varsity the year before. He is a third year Engineer at Robinson College.
Good luck Maka and Cambridge!
Congratulations to the 4 Robinson students selected to play in the rugby Varsity this weekend!
Women’s Team – Hetta Friend is a final year medic, she plays at number 4, second row.
Hetta started playing after lockdown in October 2020, and this is her 4th blues rugby Varsity: 2021 (win), 2022 (draw), 2023 (lost) … 2024 is the decider!
Men’s Team –
Newnham (1976). Robinson Fellow (1989 - 2010); Robinson Graduate Tutor and Praelector. Procotor (2003-6), Senior Proctor (2004-5). Peterhouse Fellow and Director of Development (2011 – 2024).
Dr Saskia Murk Jansen died suddenly and unexpectedly at home on 19th February this year. She was one of my closest friends.
On Monday 26th February, three brave Robinson students (English, Law and MML (Spanish) will be taking on their professors in a battle of wits, as they go head-to-head on 'The 3rd Degree'. The rounds vary from General Knowledge, to a Subject-specific face-off, to a 'Highbrow / Lowbrow' round, where students can challenge their professors on popular culture. The questions range from Barthes to Beyoncé and no two shows are the same. Come along and cheer on the teams:
Every year in England, over 400,000 women are referred to secondary care breast services via the breast cancer suspected two-week-wait (2WW) pathway. Of the women who attend the breast clinic via the current 2WW pathway, 6% are diagnosed with cancer; the remaining 94% are discharged from the service.
Congratulations to Robinson Fellow, Rory Finnin, Professor of Ukrainian studies, for receiving the 2024 Laura Shannon Prize in Contemporary European Studies for his book “Blood of Others: Stalin's Crimean Atrocity and the Poetics of Solidarity,”.
The jury described Finnin's work as one that “forges breakthrough integrations between Slavic and Middle Eastern Studies to open up and adroitly explore a largely understudied ‘contact zone’ of imperial politics central to the ongoing re-shaping of European conflict today: Stalin’s 1944 forced deportation of Crimean Tatars.”
